Private Candidates

Private Candidates are defined as those who pursue a course of study independently but take an examination and/or assessment at an approved WJEC examination centre (school or college). A private candidate is responsible for making appropriate arrangements with such a centre that is prepared to:

(a) make the necessary examination accommodation available and;
(b) conduct, supervise, mark and authenticate any non-examination units/components

Private candidates should find a centre before they start their studies. WJEC can only accept entries for candidates who have an arrangement with a centre.

WJEC does not hold records of the centres that are willing to make arrangements for private candidates. Where a private candidate experiences difficulty in locating such a centre in his/her area, we would advise that the Local Education Authority be contacted for advice.

There are two different specifications for most of our reformed GCSE and AS/A level qualifications. All candidates entering through a centre in England must follow the WJEC Eduqas specifications. In most circumstances in Wales, centres must follow the WJEC CBAC specifications. For the June 2019 series, centres in Northern Ireland are able to follow our WJEC Eduqas specifications (excluding GCSE English Language). Reformed WJEC CBAC specifications are not available in Northern Ireland, although candidates can resit once if they have previously taken an examination/assessment. Please check if you are unsure which specification is relevant to you.

Detailed information relating to the procedures for private candidates can be found in the booklet Information for Private Candidates.
